Derek Harris is a multi-disciplinary artist from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. An athlete turned b-boy, Derek began his formal training at the University of Oklahoma where he received several awards in modern dance as well as scholarships to attend the University of Oklahoma, the American Dance Festival, and the Joffrey Workshop in San Antonio. Derek was a co-founder and an active member of the experimental hip hop music duo Power Raymond from 2003 – 2007; producing over 50 songs, 3 music videos, and performing live shows throughout the Oklahoma and Los Angeles areas. In Los Angeles, Derek found work in commercials and music videos as a production assistant, light study photographer, choreographer, and actor. Since moving to San Francisco in 2007, Derek has worked with many established choreographers including Hope Mohr, Raisa Punkki, and Phelein Wang, as well as presenting his own work for stage and film with Human Creature Dance Theatre(humancreature.org) which he co-founded in 2008. In 2012, Derek and his partner Meegan Hertensteiner opened 975 Howard Studio(975howardstudio.org). 975 Howard Studio serves as the home of Human Creature Dance Theatre as well as a rehearsal/performance space for the bay area performing arts community. Derek is currently working on new music and art projects, choreographing new works for Human Creature, teaching modern technique and partnering classes, and managing 975 Howard Studio. This is the first project Derek is taking part in with Deborah Slater Dance Theater.
